India became the second largest cotton producer in the world, and Subhash Grover, President and general manager of India's Cotton Corp, announced today.

At the thirty-eighth annual conference of Cotton Corp in India, Mr. Grover said: "during the 2007-08 cotton season, cotton production in India reached a record 31 million 500 thousand package, and the 2006-07 fiscal year was 28 million packs.

With this record cotton output, India has become the second largest cotton producer in the world, after China, pushing the United States to third place.

Mr. Grover said that in the 2007-08 cotton season, the total cotton cultivation area increased by about 4%, to 9 million 555 thousand hectares, and the 2006-07 cotton season to 9 million 144 thousand hectares.

With the extensive utilization of hybrid / ecological cotton varieties, the cotton farmers' selection of better cotton varieties and the concept of agricultural practice were changed. The average cotton output increased by about 7%, reaching 560 kg / ha, and 521 kg / HA in the last cotton season.
