Textile America

The free trade agreement between South Korea and the United States will not be a completed agreement, but the textile agreement has been in dispute.

Various textile and garment manufacturing groups in the United States worry that South Korean yarn and fabrics will flood the US market when tariffs on sensitive textiles and clothing are reduced by 60%.

On behalf of Ron Kirk's letter, 6 trade groups commented that in the past 40 years, South Korea has developed an advanced industry and clothing industry and has become a major textile exporter to the United States.

Quantitatively speaking, South Korea is the second largest textile supplier in the United States, and is the first supplier of carding yarn, polyester flat filament yarn and polyester filament fabric, the letter said.

The signing organization of the letter includes the American manufacturers' trade action Federation, the American Textile Association and the American Textile Organization Committee. They require that the sensitive textile products that can also be produced in the United States should be suspended for the longest time, and the gradual suspension should be mutual.

They also called for stricter rules of origin and increased customs enforcement to prevent pshipment of products from other countries, such as China.

Julie Hughes, the president of the USA-ITA, wondered why the textile industry was being complained and why it was being raised at the moment.

Hughes said: "we are somewhat surprised to see such negative reactions to the terms of the Korean free trade agreement.

From our point of view, these textile groups almost get everything they want in this deal. "

Hughes notes that the agreement is a yarn promotion regulation, put forward by the textile industry, and all the yarn authorized in the tax-free items comes from Korea or from the United States.

They can't come from other countries, such as China.

Tantillo, executive director of the United States manufacturing trade action Federation, said the textile and clothing industry is busy with their problems, because President Obama attended the G20 leaders meeting in Toronto at the end of 6, declaring that he hoped to resolve the U.S. - South Korea free trade agreement in early November, and then quickly passed the agreement.

The free trade agreement still needs the approval of the US Congress and the South Korean parliament, although President Bush signed the agreement in June 30, 2007.
