Joseph Nye, an emeritus professor at the University, wrote in the New York Times recently that the western society led by the United States does not need to overestimate China's strength. Although China's international influence is growing, it is not enough to pose a threat to the hegemony of the United States in the world.

Joseph Nye is "

soft power

The proponent of the concept was once the assistant secretary of defense of the United States.

In his article, he said that overestimating China's strength is likely to trigger the fear of China's rise in western society.

The article points out that although China's economic strength is growing rapidly, China can not compare with the United States in terms of soft power.

After the outbreak of the international financial crisis in 2008, the excellent performance of China's economy and the active assistance to countries deeply involved in debt crisis led to the emergence of the rapid rise of China and the accelerated decline of the United States. Many international experts wrote that the hegemony of the United States had been challenged.

However, Joseph Nai's article points out that this is actually a misunderstanding and misleading.

He said, "as I said in the book" the future of power ", excessive advocacy of China's strength will only increase suspicion and hostility between China and the United States.

Joseph Nai pointed out that this would only make compromise and cooperation between China and the United States more difficult.

He said that both China and the United States should be as comfortable as possible, because the cooperation between China and the United States will bring great benefits to both sides, and the conflict may lead to a global disaster.

According to a recent poll conducted by Pew Research Center, about 47% of Americans believe that China has become the dominant force in the world economy, while only 31% of Americans believe that the US is still the leading force in the world economy.

60% of respondents believe that the national power of the United States is declining.

Joseph Nai did not agree with the findings. He said that at least until the 50s of this century, the United States was undoubtedly the world's only superpower.

He said that even if China caught up with the United States in terms of economic size, it would still be far from military strength and soft power.

Joseph Nai pointed out that how to improve soft power has become the biggest obstacle to China's rise.
