Second Hand Clothing Is Expected To Catch Up With Fashion In Ten Years.
We all like cheap clothes, but they are expensive, not only for our environment, but also for the people who make them.
Textiles account for 4% of New Zealand landfill waste, according to the Ministry of environment. Not only is glass 2.5%, but diapers and health products account for 2.7%.
They not only blocked landfills, but according to the United Nations, the textile industry contributed about 10% of the world's carbon dioxide emissions, which surpassed the total aviation and shipping industry.
In terms of wastewater pollution, the contribution of clothing production to the world is as high as 20%. According to the data of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the clothing purchased by people in the world increased by an average of 60% over 2000, but they kept the clothing for half of the time in 2014.
The love for new clothes means that a garbage truck is burned or delivered to landfill every second.
The relationship between fast fashion industry and human rights is at best rough. As we all know, wages are very low, forced labor and child labor are common.
The influence of industry on environment and human life is undeniable. Secondhand clothing is usually pushed to solve this problem. But frugality really solves our dependence on fast fashion?
A survey conducted in 2019 by Thred Up, a global online secondhand shop, showed that sales of second-hand clothing showed a "phenomenal" growth, which is undoubtedly a growing market.
Neil Sanders Neil Saunders, chief marketing analyst at Thred Up, said that as consumers seek more environmentally friendly options, they expect growth to continue.
