According to the latest statistics from EURATEX, the European textile and apparel industry is still not ideal in spite of its good performance in retail sales and export trade in 2019. The epidemic will lead to the development of the whole industry in 2020.

In 2019, the European economy slowed down as a result of the trade friction between Britain and Europe. Against this background, the operating income of textile and apparel industry in 27 European countries has declined compared with 2018. This is the first time since 2013, there has been a decline in operating income. Among them, the textile business income has dropped by 2%, and the apparel industry revenue has declined by 1.3%.

However, in terms of retail and export trade, sales continued to grow: in 2019, the retail sales of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods increased by 0.9% in the major stores, and the trade volume between the 27 European countries exceeded 170 billion euros, an increase of 4% compared with 2018.

The European Union's statistics bureau is concerned about the development of the European textile and apparel industry in 2020, as data show that the confidence of the whole industry has been hit since the outbreak of the epidemic in March. The survey showed that more than half of the company's output and sales decreased by 50%, 90% of the enterprises were facing serious financial difficulties, about 80% of the textile and garment companies were laid off, and 1/4 of the enterprises were considering bankruptcy.

At present, in order to prevent and control the epidemic, European countries are very strict in border control, resulting in many orders can not be delivered normally, and the rate of order cancellation is increasing. To ease the pressure on textiles and clothing enterprises, the EU statistics bureau has applied to the European Commission to provide tax relief for related enterprises and appropriately relax control over trade products among EU Member States to ensure the normal circulation of goods.
