Li Zhengdao was born in Shanghai in 1926.
Columbia University Professor, a Chinese American physicist, is famous for his contributions to parity, conservation, Li model, relativistic heavy ion collision (RHIC) physics, and non topological soliton field theory.
In 1957, Chen Ning Yang's Nobel prize in physics was found to be a major discovery in the field of elementary particles due to the discovery of the parity nonconservation law under weak interactions.
He actively promoted the construction of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, established the National Natural Science Fund and set up a post doctoral system, and established a government fund with personal savings to support undergraduate research practice.
In recent years, he and his colleagues have developed a theory called Timeon, which predicts a new particle that can produce differences between past and future.
Our earth is a small planet in the solar system, and our sun is not so unusual in the 400 billion stars of the galaxy. Our entire galaxy is very small compared with the whole universe.
But because of the ancestral culture of the Yan Huang culture, our loess blue water is more distinctive, intelligent and human than other parts of the universe.
Due to limited energy, I don't know much about World Expo, Shanghai.
However, as a great event of human civilization, I believe that its most important significance is to show how the human beings on this planet live, never stop to move forward, explore the world and explore the universe.
World Expo, Shanghai is the first comprehensive world exposition to be held in developing countries.
For developing China, hosting the 2010 World Expo is not only a platform for cooperation among countries around the world, but also an important opportunity to further strengthen exchanges between China and foreign countries.
World Expo is a stage to demonstrate the application of science and technology.
In the past 150 years, many of the latest technology, ideas and culture are related to World Expo: most of the major inventions such as automobiles, televisions, electric lights and elevators were first exhibited in World Expo and World Expo.
As far as I know, this year, World Expo, China and Shanghai will also exhibit many refreshing technological achievements, which are inseparable from the contributions made by several generations of scientists in basic research.
How can we Chinese continue to produce new achievements in the decades after World Expo?
{page_break} I believe that in the field of basic research, China must not miss the twenty-first Century.
In the past, China missed the seventeenth Century of classical mechanics, missed the 18 and nineteenth Century of electromagnetism, and missed the twentieth Century of relativity and quantum mechanics, and must never miss twenty-first Century again.
The development of physics in the new century is closely related to "known substances", "dark matter" and "dark energy".
According to our current research results, only about 5% of the total energy of the universe is the energy of known substances. These known substances are composed of electrons, protons, neutrons and a very small number of positron and antiprotons. The remaining 95% are unknown, of which about 22% are dark matter and 73% are dark energy.
The existence of dark matter is known by the effect of gravitation, and the existence of dark energy is judged from the acceleration of cosmic expansion.
Understanding and detecting dark matter and dark energy is the greatest challenge of contemporary physics.
We Chinese must take part in it.
There may be some doubts that China's research in this field can not take the lead in the world. Let me give you two examples: there are two very important concepts in astrophysics, one is the nova, the other is the supernova, and these two objects were first discovered in China.
The Chinese discovered new stars as early as the thirteenth Century B.C., that is, the Shang Dynasty. Supernovae were discovered in the Song Dynasty, when Chinese scientists discovered that the stars were shining during the day, and "big as eggs". They recorded their brightness every day for a year.
These records are one of the earliest astronomical observations in the world.
Our ancestors have made great contributions, and I firmly believe that with the unremitting dedication and permanent patience, the modern Chinese will certainly be able to do so.
